Few German castles let you actually stay the night. Adolphsburg Castle (Wasserschloss Adolphsburg), built in 1677 in Kirchhundem-Oberhundem, is one of them. Inside the main building you'll find the Saalstube: a privately let holiday apartment with one large living room, a sleeping gallery, stucco ceilings and two tall windows looking straight onto the castle park.

A short history of the castle

Adolphsburg was built in 1677 by Johann Adolf von Fürstenberg, a cathedral canon in Münster who later became provost in Paderborn, as his Baroque country seat in the Sauerland. The moated castle takes its name from its builder. Over the centuries it served among other things as a missionary school and stood empty for a time, before being carefully restored from 1985 onwards. Today the historic ensemble with its moat, courtyard and park is one of the landmarks of the Olpe district.

Getting here

The Sauerland lies about 1.5 hours from Cologne and the Ruhr area, and around 2.5–3 hours from the Netherlands and Belgium. Airports: Cologne/Bonn and Dortmund (approx. 1.5 h), Düsseldorf (approx. 2 h). By train, travel to Lennestadt-Grevenbrück (about 15 minutes away); buses run to Oberhundem. A car is the easiest way to explore the region.
